Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a complex and debilitating disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that does not improve with rest and may worsen with physical or mental activity. The exact cause of CFS/ME is unknown, but it is thought to involve a combination of factors, including viral infections, immune system problems, hormonal imbalances, and psychological stress.

Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Severe Fatigue: Persistent and unexplained fatigue lasting for six months or more.

Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM): Worsening of symptoms following physical or mental exertion.

Sleep Problems: Unrefreshing sleep, insomnia, or other sleep disturbances

Cognitive Difficulties: Problems with concentration, memory, and information processing (often referred to as "brain fog").

Muscle and Joint Pain: Unexplained muscle pain, joint pain without swelling or redness.

Headaches: Frequent or severe headaches of a new type, pattern, or severity.

Sore Throat: Frequent or recurring sore throat.

Enlarged Lymph Nodes: Tender lymph nodes in the neck or armpits.

Orthostatic Intolerance: Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting when standing up.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosing CFS/ME can be challenging due to the absence of specific tests and the overlap with other conditions. Diagnosis is usually based on ruling out other possible causes of the symptoms and following established diagnostic criteria, such as the 2015 Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine) criteria.

Treatment Approaches

There is no cure for CFS/ME, but treatments focus on relieving symptoms and improving quality of life:

Lifestyle Changes: Pacing activities to avoid overexertion, establishing a regular sleep routine, and managing stress.

Medications: To address specific symptoms like pain, sleep disturbances, or depression.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): To help manage the psychological aspects of the condition.

Graded Exercise Therapy (GET): A structured exercise program that starts very slowly and gradually increases in intensity, though this approach is controversial and not suitable for all patients.

Nutritional Support: Ensuring a balanced diet and addressing any nutritional deficiencies.

Holistic and Integrative Approaches

  • Nutritional Therapy: Identifying and addressing any dietary deficiencies, supporting the immune system with appropriate nutrients, and following an anti-inflammatory diet.

  • Hypnotherapy: Managing stress and improving sleep quality through relaxation techniques and hypnotherapy sessions.

  • Mind-Body Practices: Including meditation, yoga, or tai chi to help manage symptoms and improve overall well-being.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of CFS/ME, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment plan.

Kylie Karagich

I live in Adelaide (Australia) with my husband, my two adorable Norwegian cats ( Zeus and Zena ), a chicken, and a pigeon who now also thinks that he is a chicken! My ancestry is French so it goes without saying that my favourite place is Paris. The food, culture and atmosphere of Paris is nothing short of amazing.

I am a self taught home cook who loves big flavours in food. My passion for food surfaced when I was 10 years old, watching TV chef Ian Hewitson and learning different techniques. Since then, the food of Adrian Richardson and Jamie Oliver has been my inspiration. I love how one can create a healthy full flavoured meal from just the simplest of ingredients. I especially love chilli and garlic and use them in most of my food.

I enjoy hosting dinner parties for friends and family. Curries and rustic style dishes are my firm favorites and I know that my family and friends all agree! Just place it all in the middle of the table and let everyone help themselves enjoying great food with good company.

I create flavoursome low calorie recipes which are featured on the internationally known website Weigh Yourself Slim.

Whilst I enjoy cooking I still love to go out to restaurants, especially when you discover ones with amazing food and that you must try and replicate at home!

So welcome to CCKFOOD. It is my creative playground where I am able to share my love of good food with you all. Enjoy.
